March 15 - 17:  Fox Glacier

Fox and Franz Josef are the two largest glaciers found in New Zealand.  They are very unusual in that they are found in a temperate zone:  the base (neve) of the glaciers are only 10 miles from the ocean.  The only other such glaciers in the world are in South America.

We stayed in Fox Glacier Town.  Imagine having this view from your front porch...

We took a helicopter tour over the glaciers, which was surely one of the highlights of our trip.  We had beautiful weather.  The flight passed over Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, and circled Mt. Tasman and Mt. Cook (Aoraki) which are the two highest peaks in New Zealand.  It was a spectacular flight.
