March 14:  Punakaiki

Next we headed for the west coast of the South Island.  Our first stop was Punakaiki, home of the Pancake Rocks National Park.

March 15:  Arthur's Pass

The following day, we headed south towards the glaciers.  Along the way, we took a detour up Arthur's Pass, which crosses the central island range and connects to Christchurch on the east coast.  We drove up to the peak of the pass, then turned back to the west coast.

On returning to the coast, we continued south.  We noticed that the further south we went, the bluer the rivers got -- practically turquoise!  Apparently this is due to suspended stone particles washed down from the mountains and glaciers.
