March 12 - 14:  Kaiteriteri

On March 12, we headed to the South Island onboard the Lynx Ferry.  The Cook Straits crossing has a reputation for very bad weather, but we were lucky and got a beautiful day with a very smooth ride.  A pod of dolphins accompanied us out of Wellington Harbor.

The ferry passed through the Marlborough Sounds on the way to the South Island harbor at Picton.  The Marlborough Sounds are a large collection of beautiful islands at the northern end of the South Island.

On March 13, we spent the day on a sea kayak tour of Abel Tasman National Park.  The tour is called the "Mad Mile" tour, but once again we had absolutely perfect weather so it was more like the "Mild Mile" that day.  What a beautiful park.

Action Shot

Action Photo!  Yes, that's us!

Shag

A shag (or cormorant, as we'd say)

Beach

Break time...for tea.  Or was it lunch?  Or second tea?  I forget.  At any rate a rather civilized way to kayak!

Kayak Tour 2

What a perfect day for paddling!

Taxi

We rode home via water taxi...and at the end of the taxi ride, we were pulled out of the water -- boat and all -- by a tractor, which drove us back to the kayak place!
