March 21 - 23:  Stewart Island

We took the ferry from Bluff to Stewart Island on March 21.  Great weather again -- made the infamously bad crossing with no problems at all.  Stewart Island lies off the southern tip of the South Island.  There is one town on the island; the rest is a national park.

We spent the morning of March 22 on a nature tour of Ulva Island, which is an even smaller island near Stewart Island.  Ulva Island is maintained as a safe preserve for native birds and plants -- there are no predator species on the island, and constant work goes on to keep it that way.  We did hear a lot more bird song here than anywhere else in New Zealand -- this island is probably much like New Zealand was before man arrived.

We spent the rest of our visit relaxing at our B&B, watching the birds that come to their feeders.

On March 23, we got up early to catch the morning ferry.  This sunrise was our reward...
