Andy & Beth's Fabulous New Zealand Trip

March 4:  Auckland

We headed to New Zealand on March 2, arriving on March 4, losing March 3 somewhere over the Pacific as we crossed the international date line.  First stop:  Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city.  Andy successfully drove on the wrong (left) side of the road even after a very long plane ride.  We spent our first day in New Zealand doing lots of walking around so that we would stay awake!  We visited the Sky Tower for a panoramic view of the city, and toured the excellent museum in the Domain.

(The vertical line in the photo isn't an image problem...it's a rope!  You can jump off the top of the Sky Tower attached to one of these ropes.  For fun.  New Zealanders -- Kiwis -- look for adrenalin opportunities everywhere.)

March 5:  Hahei

On Day 2, we headed off to the Coromandel Peninsula, which is a sparsely inhabited area east of Auckland.  The drive was beautiful...first along the coast and then cross-country on the "unsealed" (a.k.a. gravel) 309 road, where Andy did some road-rallying with the locals.  Yikes!  We did not wreck our car, altho one local did.  Hope the car rental company has a sense of humor about how dirty the car is when they get it back.

We spent the night in Hahei, a small town on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula.

The next morning, we hiked to Cathedral Cove, which was lovely.  The trail went high along the bluff, with side trails down to several coves.  Cathedral Cove has a large sea arch and several tiny islands.

We also enjoyed watching all the birds along the way, especially the fantails.
